Qualifications and experience: 
  • LLB Degree;
  • Postgraduate diploma in drafting and interpretation of contracts highly advantageous;
  • Admission as an Attorney; 
  • Post admission experience of at least 4- 6 years’ (Associate/Senior Associate level at a top tier law firm and at least 2 years’ as in-house counsel at a multinational);
  • Strong corporate and commercial legal background such as drafting, reviewing and negotiating a wide range of agreements according to standard and non-standard frameworks;
  • Transactional work experience ideal (M&A and deal-making);
  • Demonstrate a strong command of legal and technical issues in general commercial litigation;
  • Able to work independently with minimum supervision and demonstrate the ability to work on complex legal matters;
  • Fluency in English with sound legal communication skills (both verbal and written);
  • Must be computer literate – MS Office, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel, MS Word (Advanced Level); 
  • Solid knowledge and understanding of the Companies Act;
  • Exposure into Africa- Strong Advantage;
  • Experience in the property industry – Advantageous.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities: 
Administration and Legal Functions:
  • Dealing with complex Landlord contracts i.e. Private property landlords, municipalities nationally, Intersite, Property funds etc.;
  • Protect the security and confidentiality of the information that is privileged to the company;
  • Deal with site rental / supplier/ landlord queries from time to time;
  • Understand, implement and comment on by-laws and council policies and regulations affecting the company;
  • Assist in all tender related matters in close coordination with the tender department in Paris and the Director of Legal Affairs;
  • Assist with legal queries from Africa business under guidance of the Director of Legal Affairs; 
  • Representation of the company at meetings with various councils and other regulatory bodies under guidance of the Director of Legal Affairs;
  • Provision of sound legal advice across the SSA Group;
  • Researching impact of new legislation including those involving municipal by-laws and National legislation;
  • Guidance and advice to town-planners;
  • Undertaking the roll-out of key projects, e.g.: POPI;
  • Management of litigation function and dispute resolution in coordination with the Director of Legal Affairs;
  • Support Director of Legal Affairs as required;
  • Oversee the company secretarial function of the South African businesses;
  • Implements, under the supervision of the Director of Legal Affairs, legally compliant best business practices and policies in order to protect the company from regulatory and/or legal action; 
  • Minimises potential financial losses through identifying, assessing and mitigating risk; 
  • Training of employees on relevant legislation including training of all staff on the Group’s Code of Ethics.

Contracts: 
  • Possess knowledge of all major contracts including drafting, reviewing, negotiating and finalising a variety of contracts including Service Level Agreements, Consultancy Agreements, ICT related agreements, Share Purchase Agreement, Joint Venture, Shareholder Agreements, Corporate Guarantees, Lease Agreements, MOU’s etc;
  • Understand, implement and comment on by-laws, council policies and any other legislation that affects the company’s business;
  • Excellent and demonstrable contract negotiation skills- non-negotiable. 
  • Ensuring a successful contract management system / framework is in place to ensure timeous signing and status of contracts
  • Drafting and reviewing of legal communications.
