JCDecaux South Africa, in collaboration with Ellies Commercial Solutions to conduct a pilot study to reduce the energy consumption
As sustainable development has become a major global issue, cities around the world are more willing to reduce their environmental footprint and show a growing interest towards energy-saving issues.

For JCDecaux, the integration of Sustainable Development in the company’s strategy facilitates the management of risks related to environmental and social challenges and is a driver of innovation and an asset to medium and long-term economic development.

The increase in our activities in more than 80 countries worldwide means that we have a network of more than 600,000 furniture items in operation. Furniture energy consumption represents 80% of JCDecaux’s energy consumption.

JCDecaux South Africa, in collaboration with Ellies Commercial Solutions – a leading Southern African manufacturer, importer, wholesaler and distributor of quality lighting, electrical and Electronic products and solutions, conducted a pilot study to reduce the energy consumption of billboard across Gauteng.

Ellies recently launched a range of ALS Floodlights which have an Ambient Light Sensor built in to automatically switch on when the Lux level drops below 400 lux and switch off when the lux reaches 400 lux. This process eliminates floodlights from being left on during the day or customers having to purchase expensive day night switches to provide the same product functionality.

LED lighting is highly efficient, long lasting, environmentally friendly and inherently controllable – enabling both new and traditional applications of light.

The objective of the Pilot study was to evaluate if the new range of ALS Flood lights would operate at 100% illumination until the pre-determined time i.e.1h00 am, The Ellies LED ALS Floodlight with proprietary Crystal Driver technology automatically reduced the output of the Flood lamp to 40% from midnight and switched off the floodlight at sunrise. This Technology allowed significant energy saving while also extending the life span of the flood lamp.

The Colour Rendering Index (CRI) was increased from +80 to CRI +90. The higher CRI value allows the true colours of the medium illuminated to be displayed.

“Our engineering capabilities allow us to design and manufacture bespoke products for specific applications. Our partnership has allowed us not only to deliver on our customer expectations but develop technologically advanced lighting capabilities in a cost-efficient manner” says Gary Gillingham Group Head: Lighting.
